A STRIKING VIENNA REGULATOR
GERMAN. CIRCA 1880.
The well proportioned and elegant case has fine figured walnut veneers.
Behind the front glazed door, the two part enamel dial has Roman
numerals and an ornate pair of hands.
The brass faced lenticular bob pendulum has an ebonised wood rod
and the weights are brass sleeved.
The high quality 8-day movement has a dead beat escapement, maintaining
power and rack strikes on a gong.

A LOUIS XVI GILT BRONZE CARTEL CLOCK BAILLON , PARIS.
CIRCA 1780.
The ormolu case with silk backed sound frets and flanked by fluted
pilasters with urn finials, is surmounted by a large urn finial
with rams head ring handles from which are draped berried leaf swags
around the clock. The case is finished with a foliate terminal.
The white enamel dial signed "Baillon a PARIS" has Roman
hour chapters and Arabic five minute markers. There are well chased
gilt filigree hands and there is a regulation arbor above the XII
chapter.
The movement with square plates and an anchor escapement, strikes
on a bell using a large countwheel. The pendulum with lenticular
bob is silk suspended .

AN ORMOLU "CARTEL D'ALCOVE".
WITH PULL REPEAT.

CIRCA 1767
The fire gilded bronze case surmounted by an urn and decorated
with berried swags has pierced frets each side and a glazed aperture
to the front showing the pendulum.
The lower right hand edge of the case is stamped with the founders
mark "OSMOND".
The white enamel dial has Roman hour numerals , arabic five minute
markers and well chased pierced gilt hands and is inscribed "L.DAVID
CARRÉ À PARIS".
The eight day single barrel movement has an anchor escapement and
silk suspended pendulum.The backplate is engraved with the clockmakers
name ,"L David Carré. Paris" The clock pull repeats
the quarters and hour at will on two bells.
The spring is signed MISSIER 1767.

It is interesting to note that the movement is very similar in
layout to that illustrated in fig. 57 , plate XI of L'encyclopédie,
Diderot & D'Alembert ,entitled Horlogerie, Différentes
Répétitions and described as "Répétition
de Julien Le Roy".
CARRÉ Louis-David (b. Chatellerault 1718; d.Paris, 31st
August 1779). Son of Jean, clockmaker, and Elisabeth Delafons, sister-in-law
of Julien Le Roy. Married Thèrése, daughter of Pierre
II Le Roy.
Apprenticed to Julien Le Roy(1743). Received on 31st December 1748
by privelege of the Galeries du Louvre and Council Decree of 28
February 1748. Garde-Visiteur (1768-1770 and 1775). Syndic (1776).
Established Rue du Four (1750), Rue Dauphine (1755).
An extremely active clockmaker, he produced very fine movements,
a few clocks, and some watches in association with his father-in
-law, signed "Pierre Le Roy et Carré". He rapidly
became very wealthy, purchasing the Hotel du Mouy, Rue Dauphine,
in 1755 , for 100,000 livres.
He used clock cases by J.J. de Saint-Germain and the Osmonds, and
worked for ducs dela Rochefoucauld, de Chaulnes, de Bouillon and
the marquis de Saint-Simon and d'Espagnac.
OSMOND Robert (1711-1789) and Jean-Baptiste (1744-aft 1789). Well
known bronziers who produced clock cases for many eminent clockmakers.
