AN IMPORTANT LOUIS XVth
ORMOLU CARTEL CLOCK
Jean-Baptiste Dutertre. PARIS.
CIRCA 1765


The wonderful fire gilded bronze case is attributed to the famous bronzier Robert Osmond. The rococo design of scrolled leaves and with floral mounts has symmetrical element indicative of the transitional period. An aperture reveals the pendulum and silk backed engraved frets flank the dial. The rear of the case has a well patinated back with hinged door.
The eight inch diameter white enamel dial with Roman chapters and Arabic five minute markers has very well chased gilt filigree hands, and is signed " J?B? DU?TERTRE A PARIS." There is a regulation arbor at the XII chapter.
The long duration movement with circular "flat-bottomed" plates is signed "J. Bte. Dutertre Paris" has an anchor escapement and silk suspended pendulum and strikes on a bell using a large numbered countwheel .

Married to Monique-Antoinette Lesane. Received on 23rd June 1735. Established Quai des Orfèvres. Took over his fathers workshop. An important clockmaker . He also used clock cases by J de Saint -Germain, B. Lieutaud and J.B. Osmond.
His work was owned by President Bochard de Saron, The marquis de Béringhen, de Ponts, de Marigny, de Chantemerele, the duc de Penthièvre, The duchess de Mazarin, The comte de La Marck, M.M. Radix de Sainte-Foy, Le Peletier de Mortefontaine, and d'Argouges.
Museums: Fontaine-Chaalis, musée Jacquemart-André; Lyon, musée des Arts Décoratifs; Warsaw, Lazienski Palace.

A STRIKING WEIGHT DRIVEN WALL CLOCK. William Hay. Coventry. Circa 1830


The mahogany case with particularly good flame veneers and rosewood crossbandings has a round hood with a hinged circular glazed door. The shaped trunk door is flanked by quarter columns and the trunk has a curved panel at its base.
The 14 inch white dial, signed "WILL HAY. COVENTRY." has Roman hour numerals . The falseplate is stamped "FINNEMORE". The hands are of steel and spade design.
The eight day movement strikes the hour on a bell and has a brass faced lenticular bob pendulum and original shaped cast iron weights.

AN EIGHTEENTH CENTURY NEUCHATEL BRACKET CLOCK.

Joh ULRICH HAAS in BIELL.
1769


The waisted case , decorated with painted floral decoration on a deep red ground and with water gilded edge mouldings, stands on its matching bracket.
The white enamel dial with Roman hour chapters and arabic five minute numerals has a pair of fretted steel hands.
The unusual rectangular plated movement with shaped shoulders, countwheel strikes the hour and half hour on a bell. (originally striking on two bells). It has its original verge escapement and a small lenticular bob pendulum. The inside of one plate is stamped with the year of manufacture, "1769". The backplate is engraved with the makrs name, "Joh Ulrich Haas in Biell". The striking and going trains are driven off one spring barrel with two great wheels.

A LOUIS XVI GILT BRONZE CARTEL CLOCK BAILLON , PARIS.
CIRCA 1780.

The ormolu case with silk backed sound frets and flanked by fluted pilasters with urn finials, is surmounted by a large urn finial with rams head ring handles from which are draped berried leaf swags around the clock. The case is finished with a foliate terminal.
The white enamel dial signed "Baillon a PARIS" has Roman hour chapters and Arabic five minute markers. There are well chased gilt filigree hands and there is a regulation arbor above the XII chapter.
The movement with square plates and an anchor escapement, strikes on a bell using a large countwheel. The pendulum with lenticular bob is silk suspended .

AN ORMOLU "CARTEL D'ALCOVE".
WITH PULL REPEAT.
L. DAVID CARRÉ À PARIS
CIRCA 1767

The fire gilded bronze case surmounted by an urn and decorated with berried swags has pierced frets each side and a glazed aperture to the front showing the pendulum.
The lower right hand edge of the case is stamped with the founders mark "OSMOND".
The white enamel dial has Roman hour numerals , arabic five minute markers and well chased pierced gilt hands and is inscribed "L.DAVID CARRÉ À PARIS".
The eight day single barrel movement has an anchor escapement and silk suspended pendulum.The backplate is engraved with the clockmakers name ,"L David Carré. Paris" The clock pull repeats the quarters and hour at will on two bells.
The spring is signed MISSIER 1767.
Height 18 ins.(45.72cms.)

It is interesting to note that the movement is very similar in layout to that illustrated in fig. 57 , plate XI of L'encyclopédie, Diderot & D'Alembert ,entitled Horlogerie, Différentes Répétitions and described as "Répétition de Julien Le Roy".

CARRÉ Louis-David (b. Chatellerault 1718; d.Paris, 31st August 1779). Son of Jean, clockmaker, and Elisabeth Delafons, sister-in-law of Julien Le Roy. Married Thèrése, daughter of Pierre II Le Roy.
Apprenticed to Julien Le Roy(1743). Received on 31st December 1748 by privelege of the Galeries du Louvre and Council Decree of 28 February 1748. Garde-Visiteur (1768-1770 and 1775). Syndic (1776). Established Rue du Four (1750), Rue Dauphine (1755).
An extremely active clockmaker, he produced very fine movements, a few clocks, and some watches in association with his father-in -law, signed "Pierre Le Roy et Carré". He rapidly became very wealthy, purchasing the Hotel du Mouy, Rue Dauphine, in 1755 , for 100,000 livres.
He used clock cases by J.J. de Saint-Germain and the Osmonds, and worked for ducs dela Rochefoucauld, de Chaulnes, de Bouillon and the marquis de Saint-Simon and d'Espagnac.

OSMOND Robert (1711-1789) and Jean-Baptiste (1744-aft 1789). Well known bronziers who produced clock cases for many eminent clockmakers.
