A VERY FINE LOUIS XVIth MANTEL CLOCK OF WHITE MARBLE WITH PATINATED AND FIRE GILDED BRONZE.
JOSEPH REVEL. CIRCA 1790.

The impressive case surmounted by "The Cockerel of France" with spread wings and standing on a pile of books and berried laurel branches , is flanked by seated classical females, the one to the right representing study with an open book on her lap, and the one to the left representing philosophy with writing implement and tablet. The inscription in the open book, "L'Etude la plus necessaire a l'homme est celle de l'homme" which translates to, " The most necessary study for man is that of man".
The central cast relief below the dial, depicts putti as allegories to , Painting, Astronomy, Sculpture and Geography. The panelled rectangular base with rounded ends has three pierced gilt friezes depicting putti within scrolling foliage.
The white enamel dial is signed on the rear by the enameller , Edme-Portail Barbichon who specialised in the production of clock dials. The hour , minute and calendar numerals are Arabic , and the dial is signed "Revel à Paris".
The finely chased gilt interlaced hands have fleur de Lys tips whilst the calendar hand with arrow tip is of steel.
The "flat-bottom plated" movement with an anchor escapement and silk suspended pendulum, countwheel strikes the hour and half hour on a bell. The calendar indication is driven from the strike train and is set to increment on the 12 o'clock strike.
The original springs are signed "MONGINOT" and were produced in the major spring workshops of the brothers, Claude, Jean-Gaspard and Jean-Claude-Thomas Monginot.
The seated figures relate to the work of the sculptor Simon-Louis Boizot (1743-1809) who created similar models of L'Etude and Philosophie for the Sèvres Royal Porcelain Factory, 1780. Boizot's groups were subsequently incorporporated into a design for a closely related clock attributed to the bronzier François Rémond (b. circa 1747, d. 1812), executed circa 1783-5 in response to a commission by the marchand-mercier, Dominique Daguerre. In 1788 Daguerre supplied Louis XVI with two clocks of that model for the Salon des Jeux at Château de Saint-Cloud.

An almost identical clock can be found in Stockholm Castle (inventory no. HGK11).
This is illustrated on page 297 in the book "Vergoldete Bronzen- Die Bronzarbeiten des Spaetbarock und Klassizimus" by H. Ottomeyer and P. Proeschel. Munchen 1986.
Other similar clocks can be found in "Pavlosk Leningrad" and "Paris Elysee Palais".
